For club management professionals, experience is essential — but recognized professional credibility is what sets leaders apart.
That’s the role of the Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation through the Club Management Association of Canada. The CCM is the highest professional certification available to club managers in Canada and is recognized internationally through its connection to the Club Management Association of America.
Earning your CCM is more than completing courses. It’s a structured professional journey that validates your knowledge, leadership ability, and commitment to excellence in club management.
The Certified Club Manager designation recognizes the specialized skills required to lead today’s private clubs. It reflects competence across governance, finance, leadership, operations, food & beverage, membership, facilities, human resources, and more.
The program was originally developed in the United States in 1965 and adopted in Canada around 2000. Today, the CCM is considered the hallmark of professionalism in the club industry.
When members, boards, and employers see “CCM” after your name, it signals:
Club management is uniquely demanding. You balance member expectations, board governance, staff leadership, financial sustainability, facilities oversight, and service excellence — often all at once.
The CCM matters because it demonstrates that you have intentionally built the knowledge required to manage all of it.
Professionals who complete the CCM often say it:
It’s not just a credential. It’s professional development that changes how you lead.
The path to CCM is built around earning 300 credits, designed to ensure candidates gain broad exposure to education, industry involvement, and professional growth.
These 300 credits come from three areas:
200 Education Credits
Through approved courses, workshops, and institutes
50 Association Activity Credits
Through involvement with CMAC and the club industry
50 Additional Credits
From approved professional development and industry participation
This structure ensures CCM candidates are not only educated, but also actively engaged in the profession.
A significant portion of CCM credits comes from formal education designed specifically for club professionals.
This includes participation in:
Club Management Institute (CMI)
Delivered through CMAC, CMI workshops focus on practical, real-world skills specific to club operations and leadership.
Business Management Institute (BMI)
BMI courses, delivered in partnership with CMAA, cover essential business and leadership principles for club executives, including:
CMAC National Conference
Attendance at a national conference is also required, reinforcing the importance of industry engagement and peer learning.
Together, these programs provide both the theory and application needed to lead effectively in the club environment.
To apply to take the CCM exam, candidates must:
This ensures candidates have sufficient real-world experience before attempting certification.
Once the credit, education, and membership requirements are met, candidates are eligible to sit for the CCM exam.
The exam evaluates knowledge across the full spectrum of club management competencies, including:
Passing the exam confirms that your experience is supported by comprehensive professional knowledge.
The CCM designation is valid for five years. To maintain it, CCMs must earn:
This ensures CCM holders remain current, engaged, and continuously learning — qualities essential in the evolving club industry.
What motivated you to pursue the CCM designation?
“When I came to clubs, I came from an outside industry and didn’t have much club exposure. Pursuing my designation gave me the ability to study the club environment and apply my learning on a day-to-day basis. When I started attending events and courses, I met people who didn’t just ‘work’ in clubs but ‘lived’ in them. I knew this is where I wanted to be, and my designation provided stepping stones along my club path. My designation is something I am very proud of!”
— Laura Manganaro, CCM, General Manager, The Virtual Golf Club
How did the process influence your approach to leadership or management?
“It shifted how I saw my role. It wasn’t just about my own development anymore — it pushed me to fully embrace giving back to the industry.”
— Paul Cadieux, CCM, Chief Operating Officer, Bayview Golf & Country Club of Toronto
What advice would you give to others considering their CCM?
“My strongest advice is to remain consistent and committed throughout the process. Complete the BMI courses annually, if possible, as they build a strong foundation of knowledge over time.
I highly recommend taking the official review course prior to writing the exam. Statistics consistently show that candidates who participate in the review course have a significantly higher success rate.
It is also essential to thoroughly read and understand the textbook material. The volume of content can feel overwhelming, so giving yourself adequate time to review and absorb the information is critical.
Pursuing the CCM was one of the most impactful decisions I have made in my career. Within three years of completing the designation, I advanced to a General Manager position. For anyone considering it, the investment is absolutely worthwhile, both professionally and personally.
It is never too late to write the exam!”
— Lisa Brown, CCM, General Manager, St. Catharines Golf & Country Club
