Below you will find information provided by co-op programs as well as some hiring incentives that may be available. Co-op programs require one or more work placements, also known as Work Integration Learning (WIL).
Hiring Incentives
Did you know there are government programs that support employers that hire co-op students? Check out the list below!
Ontario Co-operative Education Tax Credit - receive up to $3,000 for each 4 month work term.
Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) - the Government of Canada has a variety of funding opportunities as part of SWPP, administered by Employment and Social Development Canada. Employers can apply for wage subsidies of up to $7,000. ESDC works with delivery partners in various work sectors. To apply, clubs must contact the delivery partners directly. Some delivery partners are industry-specific, however the following may be options to consider:
Canada Summer Jobs - provides funding for eligible employers, including private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees.
University of Guelph - Sport and Event Management Co-op Program / Hospitality and Tourism Management
The University of Guelph co-op program has over 5,000 co-op students participating across 65+ degree majors. The main programs applicable to the club management industry fall under the business program: Commerce Co-op Overview | University of Guelph (uoguelph.ca). In addition to the Sport & Event Management and Hospitality and Tourism Management programs, hiring managers may also consider other programs such as management, marketing management, and accounting.
Most students are available for 4- or 8- months, and recruitment begins each semester in January, May, and September and continues throughout the term. Hospitality Management students are available for a 12-month work term, starting in May and concluding in April the following year. Recruitment starts in early January.
Each full-time and paid work term must be at least 420 hours and 12 weeks in duration. The salary guide is available below.

George Brown College - Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts
George Brown College's Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts (CHCA) is comprised of Chef School, and the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Both provide multiple programs in hospitality, operations, food and beverage management, event management, and the culinary arts. All of these programs require at least one mandatory Work Integration Learning (WIL) component. The majority of the students complete this WIL externship during the Winter term, January to April. A second round of students complete their WIL from May until August.

Fall 2024 – Baking & Pastry Placements
Baking and Pastry students are currently actively applying for their upcoming externships, scheduled from October 28th to December 13th, with 24 hours per week for a total of 168 hours. If you would like to host a baking & pastry intern, please forward a job description. Once I receive it, I will post it for students to apply directly to you. Winter 2025 – Culinary Placement
Applications for Culinary students open on Monday November 4th. These students are available from January 6th to April 18th, with 24 hours per week for a total of 336 hours. Humber College - Longo Faculty of Business
Humber College's Longo Faculty of Business offers several programs relevant to the club management sector that require co-op placement or other Work Integrated Learning opportunities. These programs include Hospitality and Event Management, Sport and Recreation Management, Professional Golf Management, Baking and Culinary, HR Management, and other Business Administration and Management studies. Hospitality and Event Focused programs:
Hospitality - Hotel & Restaurant Operations Management Diploma
12 weeks , 24 hours per week for a minimum total of 288 hours
Between January 8 and April 4, 2025
Students in this program may work in hotels, banquet or golf facilities, tourist attractions, retirement, or long-term care facilities (in hospitality related positions) or food & beverage front of house positions (no culinary) for their placements.
Hospitality - Event Management Diploma
Minimum total of 160 hours
Between January 8 and April 19, 2025
Students in this program may work with event planners, with banquet or other venues that host events, with festivals, with supplier companies within the event sector, and in fundraising environments involved with events.
Event Management - Graduate Certificate
Minimum total of 160 hours
