Member Manual

Welcome to the Club Management Association of Canada Ontario Branch!

This Member Manual was created to help members learn more about the organization and what the Ontario Branch can do for you.

  • Who are we?

The Club Management Association of Canada (CMAC) is a national organization with regional branches across the country. The national organization is responsible for membership renewals, the national conference, account management and member profiles, as well as some national education opportunities.

The national organization and the regional branches work collaboratively, however the branches operate independently. The Ontario Branch (OB) is comprised of clubs located in central and southern Ontario between Brantford on the West and Belleville on the East, and is governed by its own Board of Directors and Committees.

The OB holds frequent intensive education sessions on club management topics, as well as local networking and social events for members in our geographic region.

  • What are the association's rules?

The CMAC is regulated by its bylaws. All members of CMAC are expected to comply with the association's Code of Ethics. Some of CMAC's policies are available here.

  • What is a typical calendar year like?

The CMAC is a very active organization. There are events scheduled throughout the year at both the National and Branch level.

On top of a calendar full of education, the Ontario Branch offers several networking opportunities throughout the year. Annual events include:

    Director Manager Dinner  - Winter

    Annual Meeting  - Spring

    Webby Cup  - Summer

    Branch Golf Tournament  - Fall

    Networking Social  - Fall

  • What professional development opportunities are available?

The OB's professional development program is created based on feedback from our members, and results of our annual member survey. Educational session information is posted on our events page.

BMI Courses are professional development courses that provide tangible career benchmarks for managers to track their progress and strive for various levels of competency. For more information about BMI programs, including courses and bursaries offered by CMAC, click here

Club Management Institute (CMI) Courses *

The Club Management Institute (CMI) is the education arm of the Club Management Association of America (CMAA), which is responsible for the Certification Program adopted by CMAC. Participating in CMI accredited courses is one of the requirements for earning the Certified Club Manager designation. Certification *

The Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation is an internationally recognized professional certification which attests that an individual has demonstrated proficiency in 11 competencies required for club managers. The CMAC website provides extensive information about the certification process, as well as the Joe Perdue Bursaries. You can also download the CMAC certification brochure, or review the article in Club Manager Quarterly (CMQ Winter 2023).

    * Managed by the national CMAC office

  • Are there any online educational opportunities?

The OB offers both in-person and online education. In-person sessions are generally half or full day sessions. These sessions provide opportunities for learning and networking. Shorter intensive sessions are offered online, providing members with a convenient option for learning within their workday.

  • Where can I find info about club careers?

Club management relies heavily on the people working behind the scenes to make the operation successful. Careers in club management include accounting, marketing, human resources, membership, food and beverage management, sport management, and communications. For more information about career path options and tips, click here.

  • Are there any resources such as best practices?

All CMAC members have access to the Best Practices Library. The Best Practices Library includes template documents specific to your club’s needs, and is available whenever you need it. View the content catalogue for a complete list.

  • Are there any "mentorship" opportunities?

Definitely! The CMAC Mentorship Program aims to benefit both the mentor and mentee. The program matches mentees with a mentor based on their career path and areas for personal and professional growth.

The Ontario Branch is putting the finishing touches on our Member Link Program, which will link established thought leaders with proteges. More details will be shared once the program has been finalized.
